Clutch Replacement
A slipping clutch, a burning smell, or difficulty getting into gear usually means the clutch is wearing out and will need replacing before too long.
At Audi VW Centre, we diagnose and replace clutches on all makes and models, including manual, automatic and dual-clutch systems such as DSG.
A number of symptoms can point to a clutch that’s reaching the end of its life, including:
Clutches wear naturally over time through everyday use, but certain driving habits can accelerate this, such as frequent stop-start driving, riding the clutch at junctions, towing, or carrying heavy loads, all of which put extra strain on the components and can shorten the clutch’s lifespan.
There’s no fixed mileage at which a clutch needs replacing, as this depends heavily on driving style and conditions, as some clutches last well over 100,000 miles, while others wear out sooner if driven harshly or used regularly in heavy traffic.
A clutch replacement typically involves removing the gearbox to access the clutch assembly, so it’s a more involved job than most other repairs. We usually replace the clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing together as a kit, along with the dual-mass flywheel where fitted, since these components wear at a similar rate.
Once we’ve confirmed what’s needed, we’ll explain the work involved and provide a clear quote before proceeding.
Our technicians have the technical knowledge and equipment needed to carry out clutch replacements across BMW, MINI, Audi, Volkswagen, SEAT and Skoda, as well as most other makes. We use quality parts suited to your specific vehicle, and carry out any necessary resets or adaptations once the work is complete.
We carry out clutch diagnostics and replacements for drivers throughout Melksham, Chippenham, Devizes and the surrounding area, with a large workshop and four ramps to keep turnaround times reasonable.
Common signs that your clutch is wearing can include slipping, a burning smell, difficulty selecting gears, or a pedal that feels spongy or sits higher than usual. If you notice any of these, it’s worth having the clutch checked before it fails completely.
Not always, but many modern vehicles use a dual-mass flywheel that wears alongside the clutch. When you bring your car into our workshop, we will check its condition and advise whether it needs replacing at the same time.
Costs vary depending on the make, model and whether a dual-mass flywheel needs replacing at the same time. Get in touch with your registration, and we’ll be happy to provide a quote.
Because the gearbox needs to be removed to access the clutch, this is a more involved job than most repairs. The turnaround time depends on the vehicle, but we’ll always give you a clear timeframe once we’ve assessed the work that’s needed.
Audi VW Centre is a member of the IMI and the 1Tec Auto Hub network, giving you the reassurance of working with a garage that meets recognised industry standards and has access to the latest diagnostic technology and technical training.
